UNDERCITY's format is somewhat variable according to who is DJ'ing. On a typical night, you'll hear a smattering of gothic and industrial favorites, sure, but well-leavened with britpop, EBM, trip-hop, forgotten 80's hits and B-sides, exotic, and occasional forays into experimental/noise. We encourage our DJ's to play music that they enjoy, lesser-known artists, B-sides and esoterica, while still keeping things danceable. Check out each individual DJ's page from the Staff page to see what each DJ enjoys playing most. While you may not recognize every song you hear at UNDERCITY, it is our belief that you'll be impressed by something new or something old you'd never heard, and maybe discover a few new favorite songs.
UNDERCITY does not have a dress code. We like it when people dress nicely, like they're going to a club, but we don't insist on any particular standard of dress. We won't even make you wear black. Wear colors. Wear polka-dots. Wear whatever. We do, however, encourage people to dress outrageously or dramatically or just generally wonderfully. It makes us smily. But we certainly won't insist on it.
The style of the club itself is a pastiche of things we liked at other clubs, clubs we've visited in the past, imaginary clubs from movies or our own twisted imaginings. The club is held at the mysterious Cafe Mexicas, and we try to create an otherworldly atmosphere with lights and hangings and artwork everywhere. Combined with strange music, strange cult/horror/foreign/classic movies and strange people, we reinforce the idea that UNDERCITY is not a club that takes place in The Real World.
It's an escape from that place.
